Interview with Wilfried Pimenta de Miranda, winner of the 2016 edition of the Startups Pitches

Wilfried Pimenta de Miranda is business development manager for the IOTA Foundation. He is CEO of Alpha Venturi, an Oslo-based strategic innovation and startup launchpad dedicated to blockchain and IoT and cofounder of the startup Pillar.

1/ Can you explain what you are doing in terms of blockchain?

The IOTA Foundation gathers an elite of blockchain pioneers and thought leader advisors across industries to develop and deploy new Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLT). Most prominent is the “tangle”, a new DLT designed for the Internet-of-Things (IoT) ecosystem and the emerging machine economy. The team recognised in 2014 the limitations of traditional blockchains such as Bitcoin or Ethereum and designed from scratch a new shared ledger architecture to meet the challenge of securing and scaling micro-transactions in the IoT.  IOTA is to become an international open standard and we now work with a growing number of global corporations to explore proofs of concept and innovative business models across industries.

Pillar is one of the first startups to exploit the tangle. The founding partners of IOTA have teamed up with senior industry experts to deploy a new cybersecurity solution for connected healthcare, smart mobility and others. Pillar will unlock a new wave of innovations which have been hindered until now by data security, privacy and integrity challenges. Alpha Venturi is involved with a range of startup and open innovation initiatives aimed at accelerating its partners’ transition to the digital economy.

2/ Why did you looked into blockchain in the first place? What are its benefits? Are there remaining areas of concerns?

The IOTA team member have been involved in the Blockchain space since 2010 - 2012 and recognised early on the huge potential of distributed ledger technologies (DLT) across sectors. Like the internet, this is is a foundational technology triggering business model innovation and societal digital transformation. It has the potential to grow a new but very different wave of value creation for business and society.

With full awareness of the current hype around blockchain, we’ve stayed focused since 2015 on developing and testing a cutting edge DLT that delivers what it is meant for and not oversell beyond that. Nevertheless, when it comes to IoT, where huge volumes of real time micro-transactions need to be processed in a secured and cost-effective way, the potential of the IOTA tangle is just phenomenal. In that area, traditional blockchain architectures are not scalable due to non-negligible transaction cost. They are simply not fit for that purpose. The IOTA tangle provides a revolutionary blockless distributed ledger which is scalable, lightweight and for the first time ever makes it possible to transfer value without any fees. Contrary to today’s Blockchains, consensus is no-longer decoupled but instead an intrinsic part of the system, leading to a decentralized and self-regulating peer-to-peer network.

3/ What is according to you the future of Blockchain?

Firstly we aim to make the IOTA tangle an open standard for the IoT. In connected healthcare for example, Pillar is working towards providing a unique solution to ensure data security, privacy and integrity for medical IoT devices, and then to medical data in general. There is a lot at stake. As new EU regulations favour an individual’s control of their personal data, Pillar intends to support a new ecosystem that will connect personal health data to new innovative services. This will unleash value of personal analytics for research and precision medicine.

Several Blockchain evangelists believe the whole Healthcare ecosystem is poised for positive disruption. We think there is indeed potential but concentrate on validating carefully our technology with our partners. We are now shaping a public-private innovation ecosystem to explore use cases and catalyse the transition towards a new digital health system which offers better outcomes for patients and lower the cost burden to society. We’re thus more than happy to discuss with new potential partners.
