The VII International Conference on Life Cycle Analysis in Latin America (CILCA for its initials in Spanish), is an international forum to share experiences about life cycle thinking where methodological tools are involved with Life Cycle Analysis (ACV for its initials in Spanish); it’s highly recognized on an international level and applied for different activities concerning sustainability such as carbon footprint, water footprint, Eco design, Green marketing, sustainable purchases and environmental product declarations, among others.

CILCA is a biannual event which takes place in different Latin American countries and gathers experts and interested people around the world. The first conference was held in 2005 in San José de Costa Rica and from there it has followed a very successful journey that includes Sao Paulo (Brazil) in 2007, Pucón (Chile) in 2009, Coatzacoalcos (Mexico) in 2011, Mendoza (Argentina) in 2013 and Lima (Peru) in 2015.

Life Cycle Thinking for sustainable value chain and Eco-Innovation Training for Latin-America and Caribbean

The aim of the training is to introduce the concept of lifecycle thinking and the associated policies and business solutions that can help decision-makers from public and private sector to identify key areas for improvements. If applied strategically and systematically the solutions can contribute to better sustainability performance of both public and private organizations including enterprises and scaling up sustainability through value chains. The training will introduce the following topics:

* Lifecycle Thinking and Management, including hotspot analysis,
* Eco-innovation, a strategic business solutions to embed sustainability into doing business,
* Product Environmental Footprinting and other lifecycle based sustainability information tools
* Application of life cycle thinking for sustainable value chain, and successful cases on application of life cycle thinking in both public and private sectors

The training is part the United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) Project ‘Resource Efficiency through Application of Life cycle thinking (REAL)’, which is funded by the European Commission. The overall goal of REAL is to integrate resource efficiency in global value chains by using life cycle information on environmental impacts, thus enabling private and public organizations to make informed choices leading to increasingly sustainable consumption and production (SCP).

Being action-oriented, participants will be challenged after the training to develop a pilot project proposal aimed at enhancing the consideration of the lifecycle perspective in/by their own institutions or other partner organization (including an enterprise). Participants should come to the workshop already with ideas of pilot project areas. A subsequent and separate call for pilot project proposals will be used to select projects for seed funding from UN Environment.

0:20-0:40 Definición de objetivo y alcance: Documentación, revisión de bases de datos, diferencia entre Sistema y Unidad

0:40-2:00 Análisis de inventario: Buscar procesos, hacer modelos y montaje en SimaPro, explicación de aspectos regionales en Ecoinvent, vista en árbol-red.

2:00-2:15 Descanso

2:15-3:00 Evaluación de impactos: Evaluar procesos, comparar productos, revisar métodos de evaluación de impactos.

3:00-3:45 Interpretación: Parámetros, Montecarlo, análisis por grupos, documentación

Para el instructor:

Computadora con proyector, pizarrón, marcadores, borrador.

Para los alumnos:

Computadoras para cada asistente. De manera previa al evento se les hará llegar un código para que se instale el SimaPro en las computadoras.

Se entrega un pdf con instrucciones. Este pdf se proyectará, pero además se les entregará a los asistentes para que lo puedan revisar en la computadora. De manera adicional y optativa se recomienda llevar una Tablet o dispositivo electrónico personal en el que se pueda proyectar el pdf. Esto facilita al alumno la realización del ejercicio, pues en la Tablet puede revisar las instrucciones y en la computadora, realizar los ejercicios en SimaPro.

Idioma

Español, con las siguientes consideraciones para las personas no hablen el idioma: Asesoría: el curso se impartirá en español, pero los asistentes pueden preguntar en inglés y también se les puede responder en inglés.

Requisitos:

Tener conocimiento de Análisis de Ciclo de Vida. No se explicarán los fundamentos del ACV

Green Delta: Social Life Cycle Assessment - Understanding social impacts with openLCA and specific databases

(Social) Life Cycle Assessment with openLCA and specific databases

Objectives:
- Learn how to assess environmental and social impacts of products over their life cycles by means of the free LCA software openLCA 

- Learn how to combine Environmental and Social Life Cycle Assessment (E-LCA and S-LCA) and Life Cycle Costing (LCC)
 
- Discover (S-)LCA databases like ecoinvent, PSILCA and soca.

Topic: Life Cycle Assessment with software.


In the course, the trainer will first briefly introduce the E-LCA and S-LCA theory. Further, it will be demonstrated how social and environmental impacts and costs can be assessed and calculated along entire product life cycles using LCA software and databases. Moreover, it will be illustrated how SLCA and E-LCA (and Life Cycle Costing (LCC)) can be combined to a Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA).


For the practical application, the free and open source LCA software openLCA, the S-LCA database PSILCA and the social LCA add-on for ecoinvent, soca, will be introduced. Participants will perform practical exercises and carry out a small case study to illustrate individual working steps in different situations.

- Introduction of openLCA: installation, creation of product system, calculation and interpretation of results

- Presentation of ecoinvent, PSILCA and soca 

- Explanation of the use of PSILCA and soca in LCA software (openLCA)

- Presentation and discussion of fields of application (e.g. hybrid application) underlined by one or more case studies

- Discussion of different results and methods regarding application of different purposes (SLCA, LCSA)

Descripción general
Introducir el ecodiseño en todo el ciclo de vida de productos y servicios como una herramienta de prevención e innovación ambiental, reducción de costes e incremento del valor añadido. Para cumplir con el objetivo del taller además de los aspectos teóricos ecodiseño se presentará edTOOL® que es una herramienta web de prospección ambiental, aplicada al ciclo de vida de productos y servicios, para el ecodiseño de productos y servicios. El uso del edTOOL® permite una manera sencilla e intuitiva para aplicar la metodología de ecodiseño y mejorar la sostenibilidad de productos y servicios en empresas.
